I am writing regarding the 'MyFACTION' mode in the video game 'WWE2K25,' developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K. The monetization practices within this mode are predatory and I believe they constitute an illegal form of gambling.
In "MyFACTION" mode, new character models can only be obtained through "character cards." These cards are found in "purchasable packs" with real money or in-game currency earned slowly. In many cases, there is only a slim chance or percentage (e.g., 17%) of obtaining a desired card.
There is no alternative, non-random method of acquiring these models.
This system encourages excessive spending, as players are incentivized to purchase multiple packs in the hope of receiving a specific, rare card. It creates a 'pay-to-win' or 'pay-to-progress' environment that preys on players who want to access all in-game content.
This highlights the three key elements of gambling: consideration (paying money), chance (the random nature of the packs), and prize (the rare character models/cards).
The low odds and high cost create a system where the outcome is entirely dependent on chance, with no guarantee of receiving the desired item.
I urge 2K and Visual Concepts to investigate these practices and consider them in light of consumer protection laws, particularly those related to gambling and deceptive business practices. I believe these systems should either be regulated or banned to prevent further consumer harm, especially to minors who may be susceptible to them. I suggest they switch to a non-gambling alternative.
